How it Works

The Bodycast Studio has developed 2 different methods to produce a cast. The 'Plunge' method is used for babies and children's hands & feet and adult upright hand castings.

The 'Wrap' method is used for hands posed flat, adult torsos, faces, bellies and other body parts. Both methods use our hypo-allergenic moulding agent which is non-toxic and 100% biodegradable.

'Plunge' Method
The moulding powder is mixed with water and placed into a suitable container. The hand's or foot is then dipped into the soft creamy mixture which after just one minute, will become firm but remain flexible. During this time you are free to wiggle your hand or foot (which is great news for babies!) without spoiling the finished result.

Once the mixture is firm, the hand or foot slips easily and cleanly out. This leaves a flexible rubber-like mould which is then filled with high-quality plaster and left to dry.

Once dry, the outside of the mould is cut away leaving a prefect replica of the body part. After a further drying process, the casts are painted using our special paints and can be mounted in a number of ways.

'Wrap' Method
In order to capture every detail of the skin, our special moulding agent is mixed with water and then spread over the area to be cast. Once this has set (this takes just 45 seconds) the area is covered with plaster-impregnated bandages which will set to create a reinforced mould that can be easily removed without tearing. The initial mould will then lie securely in the plaster bandage casing. The plaster is then poured into the mould and once dry, the initial mould and plaster casing is removed to reveal your cast. This process takes a few minutes longer than the plunge method and is not used for baby or child castings.
